  Skellig Michael, Iona, Lindisfarne, Bardsey: I checked 20,228 monasteries, abbeys and hermitages across Europe against a detailed shoreline. Before 800, 4.3% of dated houses stood on islands; after 1100, about one in a hundred.

  I counted every island in a detailed open map of the world’s shorelines: 181,588 of them, 23,150 over a square kilometre. Canada has the most, and 10.3% of the world’s people live on one.
